#Tritiya (Maa Chandraghanta)

On the third day of Navratri the married form of Goddess Parvati “Maa Chandraghanta” is worshipped by the devotees. The name is derived from the fact that she wears a crescent moon “Chandra” on her forehead, in the shape of a bell “Ghanta”.

Lord shiva told Parvati that he can’t marry her, as he doesn’t want to get married ever to any woman. On hearing this Parvati in distress could not understand what to say, later on seeing her grief overwhelmed by her sufferings lord Shiva melts down and gives her the word that he will marry her. Shiva brings the procession at her Pavati’s palace which included Gods, Mortals, Aghoris, sages and shivangans to the gates of King Himavan’s (Parvati’s Father) palace to take away his bride Parvati, on the occasion of his remarriage. Shiva arrives at King Himavan’s palace in a form that Parvati’s mother Maina Devi on his sight faints in terror. On seeing his form Parvati to save her parents and other family members transforms herself into Goddess Chandraghanta and persuades Lord Shiva to re-appear in the form of a human which he accepts to do so. This is how the marriage happens.

As the date “Tritya” denotes the moon today is half depicting the one lord wears on her forehead. The significance of wearing Grey comes from this moon, the colour grey symbolises intellect, knowledge, power and wisdom. It is a colour that is dignified, conservative and carries authority. The colour Grey is also connected to the gray matter of brain cells. Grey is controlled and inconspicuous and is considered a color of compromise, because it has a mix of both black and white. It also represents bravery and success in life as she is seen with eight hands holding a trident (Trishula), Mace (Gada), Sword (khadak), bow-arrow, Lotus, Bell and waterpot with one hand in blessing posture. She rides on tiger as Vahana representing bravery and courage.
